Overview[]

The Flood are nothing, if not unsubtle. The infection forms, though still the main means for expanding their biomass and population, they are of little use when trying to infect sentient life on airborne warships in deep-space often thousands of kilometres from the infected vessel. That's where the spores come in. Little more than an organic shell strapped around a means for propulsion, they move at high speeds before attempting to crash into a vessel of choosing. The result is a ship that appears in huge numbers that will make any captain fear for his life.

History[]

The most basic of craft, the flood infection form was perhaps one of the first ships the flood used for interstellar travel. Where the flood went, Spores were sure to be taken. Dozens can be taken out by anti-fighter defenses, but hundreds if not thousands were released to infect the target ship. Even where no flood ships were sighted, there were reports of Spores in far-off systems where the Forerunners never knew the Flood were there.

Eventually, the Halo Array fired and starved them off. Much of the Flood's fleet lied in ruins, and the surviving forerunners believed they were gone for good. However, in far-off systems where even the Forerunners never charted, fleets of infected ships hid in darkness, rebuilding their spores and became lost in legend before being forgotten entirely.

Weapons and Tactical Usage[]

Lucky for any empire, Flood Spores are unarmed and very poorly armored, usually only enough to hold together during travel. Don't underestimate them, however, as they often appear in high numbers and have an effective ability to infect your ships and turn them over to the flood's side instantly. Building a lot of anti-fighter frigates, such as the Picket-class and Stalwart-class, will help reduce the chances of infecting your fleet greatly. Fighter squadrons are less effective but enough can still do enough to reduce infection chances.
