Colonize
Invasion

A highly effective refit of the standard colony ship, Phoenix support vessels function as giant troop transports, supporting its fleet with boarding parties and planetary assault capabilities. While its primary MACs are weaker when compared to dedicated capital cruisers, the Phoenix is armed with an extensive mini-MAC array and is capable of targeting multiple ships at once, making it useful for crowd control.

« I say we made a few... upgrades. »

The Phoenix-class assault ship is a heavy support ship in service to the United Nations Space Command. It excels in establishing new colonies and supporting planetary invasions.

The Phoenix-class assault ship is currently no longer available in Sins of the Prophets, and its role as an armed invasion ship has been taken over by the Orion-class assault carrier.

Overview

The essential starting capital ship of any UNSC fleet, capable of colonization. While a must-have in the beginning of a match, its necessity starts to degrade quickly as the lines of battle are drawn.

History

First introduced as the unarmed Phoenix-class colony ship in as late as the 24th century, initially, the ships were designed for transporting thousands of human settlers to new colony worlds. However, when war with the Insurrection started to escalate many of these originally peaceful ships were refitted with offensive and defensive weaponry and tasked with supporting UNSC ground forces, a role the newly refitted ships performed very effectively.

They continued their service through the Human-Covenant war and were still in use post-war. UNSC Spirit of Fire was one of these ships that not only survived the war having served with distinction (albeit thought lost with all hands) she continued to battle alien forces over Installation 00.

Weapons and Tactical Usage

While initially having almost no weapons short of Helix AA turrets, the Phoenix now boasts a wide array of heavy weaponry from a standard magnetic accelerator cannon, missiles, heavy long-ranged deck cannons, medium naval gun batteries, and even Hyperion nuclear missiles. This gives the ship a fair amount of firepower that it can spread onto multiple targets at a good range, making it a lethal foe even for some dedicated human warships or light Covenant craft. Its main assets, however, are its assault abilities.

  • Colonize: Launches a civilian expedition onto an unclaimed habitable planet to start a new UEG colony.
    • The Phoenix-class also deploys up to three resource extractors immediately to support the war effort.
  • Invasion: Launches a UNSC task force to take the surface of a hostile planet, reclaiming it by force.

The Phoenix-class refit is hardly a battleship, however, for while being big, decently tough and well armed, it's costly and best suited for what it was made to do: start out new UNSC planets, and lay waste to those not subservient to the UEG once the enemy's orbital defenses have been wiped out.
