The YSS-1000 Sabre was designed exclusively for vacuum combat and was still in the prototype phase on Reach when the Covenant invaded. With no other option, the Sabres were used for planetary defense, with exemplary results. After the success of these fighters over Reach, the UNSC gave a green light for mass production and the Sabre soon found their role serving as short range defense for many space stations and planets throughout UNSC space. Their design incorporated some of the most advanced UNSC technology at the time, including shields. They also came equipped with both a M1024 ASW/AC 30mm MLA and an ST/Medusa Missile Delivery System allowing them to cripple and destroy ships many sizes bigger and shred their way through swarms of enemy fighters and bombers.

The Sabre's greatest achievement was over Reach, where the legendary Spartan Noble Team used them to board an enemy Corvette and ultimately destroy the Long Night of Solace, one the largest and most powerful ships in the Covenant Navy.

These advanced strike fighters require extremely effective logistic systems to support them. Therefore, they cannot operate from ships and must be based out of stationary starbases and orbital hangars. However, they outperform every other strike-craft ranging from [[Seraphs]] to the [[Longsword Interceptor|Longsword]] and can function in both bomber and fighter roles.

In-game, the bomber and interceptor options are for targeting priority - they are both equally effective in combat. Make sure that effective AA defenses are destroyed to give the Sabres free rein to engage.

The massive advancements of the Sabre Program would ultimately lead to the upgrading of Broadswords post war with advanced armor and more powerful energy shield emitters allowing them to better fit their originally intended role. This would leave the Sabre in a state of Limbo similar to that of the Longsword fighters however they would still be utilized in some manner.

YSS-1000 Sabre

The best single strike craft within the UNSC prior to the refit of the Broadsword, these elite ships are only available in tactical structures such as the Sabre project hangar or Anchor Station.

Weapons and Tactical Usage

These advanced strike fighters require extremely effective logistic systems to support them. Therefore, they cannot operate from ships and must be based out of stationary starbases and orbital hangars. However, they outperform every other strike-craft ranging from Seraphs to the Longsword and can function in both bomber and fighter roles.

In-game, the bomber and interceptor options are for targeting priority - they are both equally effective in combat. Make sure that effective AA defenses are destroyed to give the Sabres free rein to engage.

History

Although the Longsword filled the role of a mainline space fighter with effective results and the F-41D Broadsword was shoehorned into its defensive position, the UNSC did not have an effective dedicated craft for this role and so the Sabre project was born. Their design incorporated some of the most advanced UNSC technology at the time, including integrated energy shields. They also came equipped with both a M1024 ASW/AC 30mm MLA and an ST/Medusa Missile Delivery System allowing them to cripple and destroy ships many sizes bigger and shred their way through swarms of enemy fighters and bombers.

The Sabre's greatest achievement was over Reach, where the Spartans of Noble Team used them to board an enemy Corvette and ultimately destroy the Long Night of Solace, one the largest and most powerful ships in the Covenant Navy.
